"It may be that today's largest neural networks are slightly conscious."

OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever

There are so many things wrong about this statement I hardly know where to begin. What does “slightly conscious” mean anyway? Is that the mental state of someone after being forced to read endless articles making ridiculous and extravagant claims about how much like humans and the brain, machine learning applications are?

On what basis of does Sutskever make such a conjecture about neural networks and consciousness? What does he mean by “conscious” and what makes him think an artificial neural network might have it or even a bit of it? Was it something he saw in the lab?

I am afraid this statement has the our Hype-o-Meter pegged!
